Conditions of Support, 2016

Timber, plywood, paint and bricks

Two freestanding timber structures occupy the space between architectural fragment and makeshift support. Exposed bracing, painted battens and worn plywood retain traces of previous use, while loose bricks sit within their open bases.

The work considers how we recognise stability and assign purpose to constructed forms. Their upright stance suggests function, yet what they support or communicate remains unresolved. Moving between them, the viewer encounters shifting relationships between surface, framework and the space beyond.

Through this provisional arrangement, familiar building materials become a means of questioning how architecture directs movement and establishes a sense of order.
