I Like Beuys and Beuys Likes Me

2021 · Performance and photography

I Like Beuys and Beuys Likes Me stages an uneasy encounter between an animal-masked figure and a body concealed beneath dark fabric. Set within a tiled interior, the photograph recasts the language of an iconic performance through improvised props, theatrical disguise and an awkward proximity between its protagonists.

The title turns artistic admiration into a knowingly impossible promise of mutual affection. Read through camp humour, the encounter becomes a negotiation with the mythology of the artist: imitation offers a means of identification while exposing the distance between a celebrated image and its makeshift reconstruction.
